As of mid-2025, Santa Maria Regional Transit (SMRT) completed its transition to a 100 percent battery-electric fleet, becoming the second transit agency in the nation to do so. With 40 zero-emission buses now in operation, riders can enjoy cleaner, quieter, and more comfortable service—enhanced by onboard Wi-Fi, charging ports, and easy trip planning and fare payment through the SMRT Pay App.

This four-year effort, supported by State and Federal grants, strengthens SMRT’s commitment to sustainability and long-term financial stability. The all-electric fleet is projected to save the City $300,000–$400,000 annually through lower maintenance needs and reduced dependence on volatile fuel markets. The transition also increases resilience by limiting exposure to supply chain disruptions and ensures SMRT can reliably operate electric vehicles across all service types, including fixed-route, paratransit, Microtransit, and support fleets.

SMRT’s move to an all-electric fleet reflects its ongoing dedication to building a smarter, safer, and more sustainable future for the community.
